6.9-Magnitude Quake Hits Islands in Pacific, No Tsunami Threat in PH

Following a 6.9 magnitude quake that hit Santa Cruz Islands, a part of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanonology and Seismology (Phivolcs) alleviated fears of a tsunami threat in the Philippines.

“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.

The advisory added that earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the epicenter.

As Philippine time, the earthquake in Sana Cruz was recorder at 6:49 a.m

“There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from the earthquake,” Phivolcs said.

The Solomons are part of the “Ring of Fire”, a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific where frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
