Experts: Chocolate Could Cause Neurological Disorder If Contaminated

Experts have recently found out that consuming chocolate products with various types of molds could cause neurological disorder.

Base on the standing studies, human mind and body can benefit from chocolates. Aside from the proven health benefits, chocolates also serve as food comfort especially to those who are chocolate lovers.

As proven, chocolates could boost consumer’s energy, however, the recent study have concluded that chocolates could house different types of molds and fungi.

“Doon sa pag-aaral na ginawa sa laboratory namin, nakita na ‘yung chocolate products, champorado, at chocolate cookies, karamihan ‘yung nakita doon ay fungi, mold,” said Dr. Windell Rivera, a microbiologist.

According to Dr. Rivera, these molds can produce mycotoxins, which may result in neurological disorders, respiratory infections, and skin allergies.

The microbiologist also added that molds and fungi thrive faster during hot seasons, advising consumers to take extra caution in handling chocolate products.

“Malaki talaga ‘yung possibility na ma-transfer [molds]. Halimbawa, lilinisin na ng nanay ‘yung isang lalagyan na na-contaminate ng molds, gaya ng, s’yempre ng, sponge, gagamitin niya sa ibang utensils… Malaki ‘yung possibility na magkaroon ng cross contamination,” Dr. Rivera emphasize.

The experts also suggest that consumers should observe excellent kitchen cleaning practices.
