Former Mayor Rowena Guanzon Considered to Head the COMELEC

Former Cadiz City Mayor Rowena Guanzon is one of those who were being considered to head the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), after the former chairman Sixto Brillantes resigned from his post as the highest official of the Commission on Elections. According to some sources, the former mayor from Negros Occidental was identified with the lawyers of DILG Sec. Mar Roxas.

The lawyer, Atty. Rowena Guanzon’s appointment to the Commission on Audit (COA) was rejected by the Commission on Appointments, but she has a bigger chance of heading the COMELEC.

Atty. Guanzon is a graduate of the UP College of Law and member of the Delta Lambda Sigman, a sister sorority of the Sigma Rho fraternty, which Roxas’ lawyers Avelino Cruz and Simeon Marcelo belong.

During the administration of Pres. Arroy, Atty Avelino Cruz was defense secretary while Atty. Simeon Marcelo was working at the office of the Ombudsman and Mar Roxas served as DTI Secretary.

Aside from Atty. Guanzon, the other names who came out applying for the vacant position at the COMELE is Atty. Ed Escueta of the National Police Commission, also a Sigma Rho member.

Incumbent Comelec Commissioner Arthur Lim has been endorsed by Senate President Franklin Drilon to head the poll body.
