Mayor Junjun Binay Detained But Snubs Senate Probe

The Mayor of Makati City, Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay was detained in the Senate but still refused to face the powerful Senate Blue Ribbon Sub-Committee, which is investigating corruption allegations against his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Mayor Junjun Binay arrived at the Senate just before noon today, January 29, 2015, he was accompanied by some of his lawyers and supporters from Makati City.

The Makati Mayor was then brought straight to the detention room of the Senate, located at the basement of the Senate Building in Quezon City.

Mayor Binay then voluntarily submitted himself to the Senate Sergeant-at-arms Jose Balajadia Jr., but remains defiant to the order for him to attend the probe. The political party of the Makati Mayor and his father Vice President Binay, send Atty. JV Bautista, noting that the Mayor is recognizing the legitimacy of the subcommittee probe.

According to Atty. JV Bautista, secretary general of the United Nationalist Alliance, will seek the help of the court over the arrest, and noted that the Mayor is willing to face a longer stay in the Senate as he has no plans of facing the subcommittee.

The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee earlier cited the Makati mayor and five others in contempt for failing to attend the hearings of the subcommittee, led by Senator Aquilino ”Koko” Pimentel III.
