Senate Approved Budget for 50,000 Free Wi-Fi Spots to be Installed Nationwide

The Philippine Senate already approved the budget to set up more than 50,000 free WiFi spots across the country as part of the government’s effort to boost education and help connect the public to the information available online or via internet. The Free WiFi Program will be run by the Department of Science and Technology as approved by the Philippine Senate.

In an official statement released by Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, the Senate Finance committee has recommended to increase the 2015 budget of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Public Wi-Fi Program from P338 million to P3 billion.

According to the Senate if the program is implemented, the free WiFi will be available in various parts of the country particularly in public high schools with an estimated 7,917 Free Wifi, 38,694 for Public Elementary Schools, 113 State Colleges (SUC’s), 1,118 public libraries nationwide and 1,490 town will benefit from free Wifi on designated public spaces.

Aside from the above-mentioned Free Wifi spots in the country, internet connectivity through Wifi will be installed in 895 Provincial, Regional Hospitals, and Government-run Medical centers in Metro Manila.

Based upon the budget approved by the Philippine Senate, the Department of Science and Technology was also tasked to install Free WiFi in a total of 85 airports, 41 seaports across the country and 69 LRT, MRT and PNR stations in Metro Manila.
