Bagyong Mario Public Storm Warning Signals Updated by PAGASA (Sept. 18)

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) updated the Public Storm Warning Signals due to Bagyong Mario, placing more areas in Luzon ares under Storm Signal Numbers 1 and 2. The announcement was released by PAGASA on Thursday afternoon as Tropical Storm “Mario” (international name “Fung-wong), enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

According to PAGASA, Bagyong Mario maintained its strength, packing maximum winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph as it moves towards northern portion of Luzon provinces.

Bagyong Mario was last spotted at 73 km East of Infanta, Quezon based upon the 8:00 Tropical Storm update released by PAGASA, it was moving west northwest at 26 kph. Public storm warning signal Number 2 was raised over Cagayan, Calayan Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands and Northern Isabela.

Areas under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 should expect winds of 61 to 100 kph in at least 24 hours according to PAGASA.

PAGASA also noted that the following ares will experience Public Storm Warning Signal No. 1:

Rest of Isabela
Northern Aurora
Quirino
Nueva Vizcaya
Ifugao
Mt. Province
Apayao
Kalinga
Abra
Ilocos Norte
Batanes Group of Islands

PAGASA also noted that Bagyong Mario will bring an estimated rainfall amount of 7 to 20 millimeters per hour (moderate to intense) within its 350-kilometer diameter. The weather bureau also warned that combined effect of the tropical storm and the southwest monsoon (habagat) will bring moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms in Bicol Region, Eastern and Central Visayas regions, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
