House Panel Junks 3 Impeachment Complaints vs. President Aquino

The House of Representatives Committee on Justice junked the three impeachment complaints filed against President Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino III on Tuesday September 2, 2014.

A total of 54 lawmakers voted to reject the three impeach complaints, declaring them as “insufficient in substance” while the other four lawmakers upheld the complaints.

The first two complaints accused President Ninoy Aquino of committing culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust for approving the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), which was declared as partially unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

The third complaint accused the country’s top official of committing culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in connection with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States. The three impeachment complaints was filed on July.

The decision of the lawmakers to dismiss the three impeachment complaints created a commotion. One activists shouted “shame on you” to the lawmakers while several activists shouted “Noynoy patalsikin! Pork barrel king!”

Neri Colmenares, the Bayan Muna party-list who endorsed one of the impeachment raps, aired his dismay about the decision of  the committee.

“Mas maganda pa noong panahon ni (former President Gloria) Arroyo. At least umaabot ng tatlo o apat na hearing bago i-dismiss ang impeachment complaint. Dito dalawang hearing lang. Talagang takot na takot si Pangulong Aquino sa accountability…This is a terrible day for the Filipino people,” Neri Colmenares told the reporters.
