Alert Level 2 To Mayon Volcano Raised By Phivolcs

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level 2 to Mayon Volcano Friday, August 15, 2014. It was been raised at 1 p.m. which simply means that the Volcano is in a state of moderate unrest.

Mt. Mayon

Mayon Volcano is an active volcano in the Province of Albay. It is somehow renowned as the “perfect cone” volcano because of it’s almost asymmetric conical shape.

Meanwhile, it was raised into alert level 2 from alert level 1 because the Phivolcs authorities have noticed the formation of a new lava dome which is measured from 30 to 50 meters high. Other possible observations by which the advent of quiet lava intrusion will lead to “greater unrest.” In addition, this also means that magma is intruding at depth and the current condition of the volcano will possibly lead to a larger eruption in the future.

Also, because of this, people or residents near the area are advised to stop entering the 6-km radius which is considered as the Permanent Danger Zone of the area. This will also be a great help to minimize the risks that will happen on a sudden explosion, landslide and rockfall if ever the Volcano will erupt.

At the moment, Phivolcs is maintaining the close monitoring of the condition of the Volcano. Each development will then be communicated to other stakeholders especially to the concerned ones.

The said alert level will possibly lead to an eruption but nothing official is yet given as of this moment. There could also be a possibility of an extension from 6-km radius Danger Zone to 7-km. This will be happening if the crater rim is low.

Let’s just wait for more updates for the activities of the Volcano. Indeed, it is important to stay safe at all.
