Bagyong Jose Now a Super Typhoon But Spares the Philippines

Bagyong Jose with its international name Halong, intensified into a super typhoon yesterday according to the latest report posted by international weather bureau monitoring the weather disturbance in the Pacific region. PAGASA noted that although Bagyong Jose is now a super typhoon it will spare the Philippines but will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon.

The southwest monsoon or Habagat would dump heavy rains over the western section of the country, including Metro Manila areas in the next three days as confirmed by PAGASA.

Bagyong Jose, the strongest cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) so far this year, is unlikely to make a landfall but it could bring heavy to intense rain at an estimated 10 to 25 millimeters per hour in areas within its 650-kilometer radius.

Meanwhile the international weather bureau particularly the US Joint Typhoon Warning System Center (JTWC) has already upgraded Halong (Bagyong Jose) into a super typhoon, which is also equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

According to the latest update of PAGASA, as of 10:00 AM today (August 4), the eye of Bagyong Jose was located based on all available data at 880 km East Southeast of Aparri, Cagayan. The strength of the typhoon is at its maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

PAGASA forecasts that Bagyong Jose is expected to be at 840 km East Northeast of Aparri, Cagayan yb tomorrow morning and at 810 km East Northeast of Basco, Batanes, by Wednesday morning. PAGASA also forecasts that the super typhoon Halong is expected to be at 980 km Northeast of Basco Batanes on Thursday or at around 250 km East of Okinawa, Japan.
