Filipino Born Math Teacher Inspires Students in New York

A Filipino who is a math teacher in New York inspires his student through rap. The said teacher is Mr. Ramil Buenaventura.

44 year Mr. Buenaventura teaches the 7th to 8th grade students in Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights New York. He is having his lessons through dancing, rapping and singing on the table. Specifically, he is teaching mathematics.

According to him, “By teaching, I can contribute to this country… I want to give back to the students, because I’m living the American dream.” He also have made music video about math to be able to catch the attention of his students.

According to the reports, most of his students are immigrants. They able to connect to math because of how Mr. Buenaventura had delivered and taught his lessons day by day.

He also have earned a master’s degree in education before he became a teacher in Manila. He was been a teacher in Manila for almost 13 years. In addition, he was one of those 169 Filipino teachers who were given the privilege to be recruited in New York in 2003 and 2004.

He started as a rookie teacher which receives a salary 6 times higher than what he got in the Philippines.

After 4 years, he became a math teacher in Renaissance.

He was also been nominated for the Hometown Heroes in Education. He was been living in New York for more than a decade now.
