TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 Crashes in Taiwan (Video)

Taiwanese domestic airlines TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 crashes in Taiwan on Wednesday while attempting to land in Taiwan’s Penghu Islands during a bad weather condition, killing at least 48 people and a number of people injured during the incident according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

Out of the 48 people who were pronounced dead, two of them were French nationals. According to a CNN report, the plane crashed into a residential building but Taiwan’s Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih noted that there were no casualties on the ground.

As of press time, the main cause of the crash has yet been confirmed, the incident happened during the time when Typhoon Matmo was moving away from Taiwan moving towards mainland China.

The TransAsia Flight GE222, was due to take off rom Kaohsiung at 4:00 PM local time but it was delayed for more than one hour due to inclement weather conditions in Taiwan.

According to some report, the plane was preparing to land at Magong airport in heavy rain, it was forced to pull up because of poor visibility. On the second attempt, the plane crashed in the village of Xixi, a mere three kilometers away from the airport runway, according to the report submitted by Penghu fire department.

Eyewitness accounts described the plane plummeting from the sky and huge flames erupting from the wreckage, damaging two houses at the crash site. Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou expressed grief and urged for a prompt investigation.

TransAsia Airways is a Taiwan-based airline company with a fleet of around 23 Airbus and ATR aircraft, flying chiefly on domestic routes, although some of its flight routes involved neighboring coutries of Japan, Thailand and Cambodia.
