UP & UST Improved their Rankings in 2014 QS University Rankings for Asia

The country’s premier education institution, the University of the Philippines (UP) together with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) improved their rankings in the 2014 QS University Rankings for Asia which was released on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

QS University Rankings

The University of the Philippines (UP) is the only state university among the five (5) institutions in the Philippines that make it to the annual rankings. Aside from UP and UST, the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Ateneo de Davao University also made it to the list of the Top 300 Universities in Asia for the year 2014.

The University of the Philippines improved its previous rankings, UP went up from 67 to 63, the UST from 150 to 141. The three other University in the country, the Ateneo de Manila University fell from 109 to 115, while the DLSU remains in 151-160 ranking and the Ateneo de Davao joins the top 5 at 251-300.

The University of Southeastern Philippines is no longer in the list of the Top 300 Universities in Asia according to the QS University Rankings. The rankings was first published during the year 2009 and adopts a methodology consists of 9 indicators:

  • academic reputation (30%)
  • employer reputation (10%)
  • faculty-student ratio (20%)
  • citations per paper (15%)
  • papers per faculty (15%)
  • international faculty (2.5%)
  • international students (2.5%)
  • inbound exchange students (2.5%)
  • outbound exchange students (2.5%)

The University of the Philippines’ improved ranking in the QS Survey is considered to the its highest since the year 2011. According to an article posted on UP’s official website on Tuesday, UP President Alfredo Pascual was quoted that the improvement can be attributed to its pursuit of internationalization, among other efforts.
