Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake Struck Surigao del Norte (April 24, 2014)

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a  magnitude 4.6 earthquake has struck Surigao del Norte on Thursday noon, April 24, 2014. The quake was recorded 28 kilometers southeast of General Luna at around 12:40 p.m.

Phivolcs released the following intensities:

  • Intensity IV – General Luna, Surigao del Norte
  • Intensity III – Burgos, Surigao del Norte
  • Intensity II – Surigao City; Socorro, Surigao del Norte
  • Intensity I – Loreto, Dinagat Province

According to Phivolcs Intensity IV is “felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a p(–foul word(s) removed–)ing of heavy rocks. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, windows and doors rattle.”

Phivolcs noted that the 4.6 Surigao del Norte earthquake was tectonic in origin and it struck at a depth of 26 kilometers. Based on the latest report, the minor quake has produced 3.1 magnitude aftershock at 2:52 p.m.

There are no immediate damage reported as of press time. We will continue to monitor any incident regarding the  Surigao del Norte earthquake and we will post an update here.

Surigao del Norte has yet to release any statement regarding its action for the 4.6 magnitude earthquake but Phivolcs advise the public earlier to be updated on the intensities and aftershocks produced by the earthquake.

On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck Ilocos Sur but no severe damage reported.
