Holy Week 2014 Holiday Pay Rules (April 17, 18 & 19)

The Philippine national government announced earlier that there will be two Regular Holidays and one Special Non-Working Holiday during the Holy Week 2014. The Maundy Thursday on April 17 and Good Friday on April 18 were declared as Regular Holidays while Good Friday is a Special Non-Working Holiday.

The Department of Labor and Employment urged employers in various sectors in the Philippines to follow the holiday pay rules for employees on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday which were declared as a national regular holiday.

DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz also reminded the holiday pay rules for the Special Non-Working Day, the Black Saturday will also in effect and employers should abide with the Pay Rules notice issued by DOLE.

Majority of the Philippine population are Roman Catholics, therefore long vacation are expected among employees as they flocked to their various provinces to celebrate the Lenten Season, one of the most important celebration among Filipinos.

Here’s the Holiday Pay Rules for Regular Holiday (April 17 & 18, 2014):

  • If the employee did not work, he/she shall be paid 100 percent of his/her salary for that day
  • If the employee works during the regular holiday, the employee shall be paid 200 percent of his/her regular salary for that day for the first eight hours
  • If the employee works more than eight hours (overtime work), he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate
  • If the employee works on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her daily rate of 200 percent
  • If the employee works more than eight hours (overtime work) during a regular holiday that also falls on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate

Here’s the Holiday Pay Rules for Special Non-Working Holiday (April 18, 2014):

  • If the employee did not work, the “no-work, no-pay” principle shall apply except if there is a favorable company policy, practice, or collective bargaining agreement granting payment on a special day
  • An employee who reports for work shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her daily rate on the first eight hours of work
  • An employee who works more than eight hours (overtime work), shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate
  • If an employee works on a special day that also falls on his/her rest day, payment is an additional 50 percent of daily rate on the first eight hours of work
  • If an employee works more than eight hours (overtime work) during a special day that also falls on a rest day, he/she can get an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate.
