15 Million Filipinos Expected to Support Earth Hour 2014

The Philippines is one of the countries worldwide who is expected to support the Earth Hour by turning off their lights tonight, March 28, 2014. There are at least 15 million Filipino supporters of the worldwide gesture to show their commitment in mitigating the impact of climate change.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources noted that the Earth Hour participation of the Philippines is expected to save at least 738 megawatts of power during the one-hour lights-off, cutting down some 508 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the country.

Earth Hour 2014

The Philippine’s Earth Hour will start at around 8:30 to 9:30 tonight for Mother Earth. The DENR added further that Filipinos will send a strong message around the world that a simple act of energy conservation can make a big difference.

According to the organizers of the worldwide event, Event Hour, they expect millions of people from 154 countries and 1,000 cities around the globe to participate in the m(–foul word(s) removed–)ive campaign to save on electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emission. 

Iconic landmarks from around the world will participate in the global Earth Hour 2014 such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Empire State Building in New York, the Space Needle in Seattle, all in the United States of America.

In Europe, UK’s Wembley Stadium, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and London Eye will also participate together with over 400 monuments in France including the remarkable Eiffel Tower.

The Earth Hour movement started in Sydney, Australia last 2007 as a lights-off event. Right now Earth Hour became the largest recurring environmental m(–foul word(s) removed–) actions worldwide. The Philippines is considered as one of the most consistent participant.

Philippines earned a distinction of being an “Earth Hour Hero Country” by consistently registering the most number of participating towns and cities since Filipinos joined the event in 2009. During that year, the country recorded a total of 647 cities and towns participated in the Earth Hour, saving 611 megawatts of electricity.
