Philippines Sets World Record for Organ Donation Pledges

After a record-breaking attempt, Philippines has set a new Guiness World Record for the most number of people to pledge and sign up for organ donation on Friday, February 28, 2014.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), at least 3,548 people signed up for only 30 minutes during the organ donation campaign held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila which bested the previous records set by India with 2,755.

The organizers for the organ donation event vies to breached the record of India with a total of 10,450 signed up after 8 hours period.

Based on the statements of Health Undersecretary Teodoro Herbosa,  organ donation sign up were organized by the Philippine Network for Organ Sharing (Philnos) with the event titled “Lifeline ng Bayan” program which aims to set up database for organ donations.

The Department of Health are still waiting for the official announcement of Guiness Book of World Records. The proclamation is expected to launch early next week.

The record-breaking donation event started at around 9 a.m. with thousands of participants flocked on the site.
