Poyang Lake: Largest Freshwater Lake in China Dries Up

The largest freshwater lake in China, the Poyang Lake, located in rural Jiangxi Province has already dries up because of an ongoing drought. The Poyang lake is also one of the country’s most popular tourist attraction.

Poyang Lake covers an expanse twice the size of London, England, the combination of drought and a new storage facility upstream at the Three Gorges reservoir – the world’s biggest dam – has caused water levels in the lake to drop into dangerously low levels.

The Jiangxi Province in China now faces water shortages while the local fishing industry has been decimated. The 3,500 square kilometers lake’s water has now completely disappeared which means that tourist can now visit the pavilion and tower situated in the middle of the lake by land instead of the traditional boat means of travel.

An ancient stone bridge was also revealed and uncovered earlier this month, the bridge had been hidden underneath Poyang Lake’s water. The stone bridge is 2,930 meters long dating back to AD1631.

The bridge is made up of granite and was one of around 1,000 similar stone bridges constructed during the Ming Dynasty as reported by Beijing News.
