San Mig Coffee Defeated Ginebra on “Manila Clasico” Showdown

The Governor’s Cup 2013 champion San Mig Coffee ended the winning streak of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on their “Manila Clasico” match on Monday, January 5, 2014.

The San Mig Coffee vs. Ginebra game at the SM Mall of Asia Arena ended in a thrilling 83-79 victory for the Coffee Mixers, despite going up against the tallest frontline in the league featuring 7-footer Greg Slaughter and high-flying Japeth Aguilar.

The San Mig Coffee Mixers also won on their crucial battle of the boards winning with 62 against 39 for Ginebra. Former Gilas standout Mark Barroca led the Mixers with 16 points, seven rebounds, six (–foul word(s) removed–)ists, and three steals.

Veteran guard Peter June Simon of the Mixers added with 15 points and five rebounds while former PBA MVP James Yap contributed with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for San Mig Coffee.

Gilas forward and veteran defensive player Marc Pingris also scored with 15 points and seven rebounds as he helped his team to improve their record at 4 wins and 7 losses.

Japeth Aguilar led the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel with a total of 26 points and impressive six blocks. No. 1 draft pick rookie Greg Slaughter contributed with 14 points while Jones Cup MVP and Gilas Pilipinas point guard LA Tenorio scored with 13 points for Ginebra. The Gin Kings is still leading the PBA All-Filipino Cup team standings with 9 wins and 2 losses.
