The highly-anticipated fiesta in the “Queen City of the South,” Cebu City, the Sinulog Festival 2014 schedule of activities kick-off last December 1, 2013, with the Sinulog Street Fair at Osmena Blvd.
The Sinulog Festival is celebrated every year in the City of Cebu as an honor to Senior Santo Niño, it is also a commemoration of the Catholic celebration as the natives of Cebu were Christianize during the arrival of the Spanish in the Visayas.
According to the written history of Cebu, the wife of Rajah Humabon, Hara Amihan who was later named as Queen Juana of Cebu, who received a baptismal gift in the form of an image of the child Jesus, the Santo Niño, from Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
The term or word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano adverb “sulog” which means “like water current movement” it describes the forward-backward movement of the Sinulog dance. The Sinulog dance consists of two steps forward and one step backward, done to the sound of drums.
