Job Fair as 2014 Bonanza for Residents of Typhoon-hit Tacloban

As a new year bonanza for residents of worst hit typhoon Yolanda Tacloban City, Leyte,  the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will hold two-day job fair in 2014.

“Due to the clamor of the people in the region, we will hold another job fair in Tacloban in the first week of January 2014,” said Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz in and interview on Wednesday.

Recently the government’s body for labor and employment held a two-day job fair in Ormoc City last December which benefited more than 1, 000 applicants. On the records, at least 171 were hired on the spot while the remaining 970 applicants were still subject for further screening.

Job Fair in Tacloban

Ormoc City, which was also devastated by super typhoon Yolanda, is one of the worst affected area in the midst of Yolanda which enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on November 8, 2013 killing more than 6, 100 leaving families being displaced.

Dominique Tutayn, director of DOLE’s mainstream agency, the Bureau of Local Employment said the applicants who were hired were engineers, nurses, site supervisors, accountants, food and beverage attendants, receptionist and household service workers.

“For those hired locally, they will be (–foul word(s) removed–)igned in Manila and in export processing zones in Cavite, Bataan, and Laguna,” Baldoz said. “Their employers will advance the cost of their transportation subject to repayment.”

Overseas employment were also offered during the job fair in Ormoc City, Leyte. At least 35 licensed overseas recruitment agencies announced more than 10, 000 job vacancies during the fair, while 11 international employers including World Vision, brought more than 3, 400 job offering.
