Dubai breaks the Guinness World Record for the largest-ever display, by setting off more than 500,000 fireworks. People in Dubai and nearby cities joined the crowded streets of the city taking pictures on their mobile phones as the fireworks display opening salvo lit up the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa during the New Year’s eve.

The Dubai Fireworks Display filled the skies above the Unite Arab Emirates’ main city, as the emirate shattered the record previously held by Kuwait during the year 2011 featuring 77,282 fireworks with an hour-long blast.

The Guinness World Records adjudicators was quoted as saying “Ten months in planning, over 500,000 fireworks were used during the display which lasted around six minutes, with Guinness World Records adjudicators on hand to confirm that a new record had been set,” the Guinness website said.

According to Guinness the Dubai fireworks display spanned 94 kilometers of Dubai coast, which boasts and archipelago of man-made islands particularly the Palm Jumeirah.

Guinness also stated that enough fireworks were launched in the first minute of the display breaking the world record held by Kuwait. The main displays took place at the Burj Khalifa and the luxurious Atlantis Hotel located in Palm Jumeirah.

The Dubai Fireworks display for 2014 New Year became a huge success through the effort of US firm “Fireworks by Grucci” the company that designed the display, using 100 computers and 200 technicians to synchronize the pyrotechnics at a reported cost of around $6.7 million.
