Martial Law Victims to Get $10M from Sale of Marcos’ Art Collection

The victims of human rights violatins during Martial Law under the Marcos regime will set to receive the $10 million  settlement from the sale of  “1899 Claude Monet” masterpiece as declared part  Marcos family’s ill-gotten wealth.

According to the victims’ lawyer, each cl(–foul word(s) removed–) suit member is expected to receive P50, 000  ($1,175)  by January 27, 2014 as part of compensation out of $2 billion judgment awarded to 9,539 victims  by US district court located in Hawaii in 1995.

Atty. Rod Domingo clarified that the amount will be distributed personally and not by any other means in order to (–foul word(s) removed–)ure exact amount will be receive by each cl(–foul word(s) removed–) suit member.

“This is a victory for the victims, and it’s very timely since we will be celebrating Human Rights Day,” the lawyer said and Domingo added “this is the second distribution already. We had a distribution of US$1,000 (P43,200) to each victim in 2011.”

Last July, Domingo and his American counterpart, Robert Swift, disclosed $10 million after Claude Monet’s “Le B(–foul word(s) removed–)in aux Nympheas” in exchange for keeping the famed art in the custody of the buyer and not to be dragged into the ill-gotten Marcos wealth cases.

Claude Monet’s “Le B(–foul word(s) removed–)in aux Nymphes”, is a part of water lily painting series. Mrs. Imelda Marcos previously owned the famed art before it disappeared in the wake of Edsa People Power Revolution which lead the downfall of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.
