“Metro Manila” Movie Big Winner at British Independent Film Awards

The movie “Metro Manila” garnered a total of three major awards in the recently concluded British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) during the awarding ceremony held on December 8 (December 9, PST) at the Old Billingsgated Market, London, United Kingdom.

GMA News reported that the British Independent Film Awards is considered as the second most prestigious and “well-attended awards” in the United Kingdom, only second behind the highly-popular British Academy of Film and Television Awards or BAFTA.

“Metro Manila” captured the highest awards at BIFA, the Best British Independent Film. The director of the movie, Sean Ellis was also awarded with the Best Director award.

The movie also won as “Best Achievement in Production” in the British Independent Film Awards 2013. The movie “Metro Manila’s” settings is in the Philippines featuring Filipino actors, John Arcilla, James Macapagal, and Althea Vega.

The movie tells about the story of Oscar Ramirez portrayed by Jake Macapagal who brought his family to Manila to look for a better future but he was eventually linked to a crime.

Aside from the three major awards garnered by Metro Manila, the movie also got a nomination as Best Supporting Actor for John Arcilla while Jake Macapagal was nominated as Best Promising Newcomer.

The Best Supporting Actor was awarded to Ben Mendelson from the movie, “Starred Up.” The Best Newcomer award was also given to Chloe Pirrie for the movie “Shell.”

The movie “Metro Manila” is also the official entry of the United Kingdom for the Best Foreign Language Film category in the highly-anticipated Oscars 2014.
