According to Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma in an official statement on Friday, December 6, 2013, he stated that “it is the duty of every Filipino to pay the correct taxes.”

Sec. Coloma was quoted as saying “Tungkulin po ng bawat mamamayan ang pagbayad ng tamang buwis. Paying taxes is one of the basic obligations of every Filipino citizen. Kaya ang pananaw po namin ay hindi makatuwiran ang panukalang ‘yan,” Coloma said.

The Tax Exemption Bill filed by Congressman Gunigundo will entitle Manny Pacquiao to receive a lifetime tax exemption. The congressman wants the bill to be known as the Pacquiao Act of 2013.

According to Section 3 of House Bill 3521 (The Pacquiao Act of 2013), it says the “state shall confer lifetime individual income tax exemption to boxing icon Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao, also known as Manny Pacquiao, who has given outstanding honor and pride to the Filipino people.”

The eight division world champion in different weight categories Manny Pacquiao is currently involved in a legal battle against the Bureau or Internal Revenue (BIR) for back taxes from the year 2008 to 2009 amounting to over P2.2 billion.
