Aquino Appoints Finance Undersecretary Sevilla Replacement for Biazon

After the irrevocable resignation of former Customs’ Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, President Benign Aquino III has appointed Department of Finance Undersecretary John “Sunny” Sevilla to be the officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

“While it is a monumental challenge to fill the shoes left behind by Ruffy Biazon at Customs, we are in full support of the President’s decision to tap Undersecretary Sevilla for the job,” Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima said.

“Leadership of the Bureau of Customs requires someone who is results-oriented and an expert on economics, international relations, and project implementation. These traits describe Sunny Sevilla perfectly,” he said.

“We recognize that it is our temporary loss at the DOF to see Undersecretary Sevilla go, but nevertheless, we wish him the best on this new opportunity to serve the country,” Purisima added.

Sevilla served as  Department of Finance’s Undersecretary for the Corporate Affairs Group and Privatization since 2010 and he also served as Undersecretary for Privatization from 2006 to 2007.

Prior to stint as undersecretary at the Department of Finance, he had worked as an executive director at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, and had also covered the Philippines as an (–foul word(s) removed–)ociate director and sovereign rater for credit rating agency Standard and Poors’.

Sevilla will take over the post vacated by Ruffy Biazon who resigned after the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed a case for graft and malversation of public funds against him in connection with the alleged participation on the pork barrel scam.
