451 Private Schools Tuition Fee Hike; SUC’s Under Moratorium

A total of 451 out of the 1,604 private schools in the Philippines have applied for tuition fee increase to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the Academic Year 2013-2014.

Some of the biggest private schools in the country have pending applications for 5-10% increase in tuition. They were the UST, 5%; UE-Recto, 5%; Lyceum University of the Philippines, 5%; UE-Caloocan, 3.5%; Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 8-10%; DLSU, 5% and Adamson University, at 10%.

Meanwhile the 111 state colleges and universities in the entire archipelago were set to observe a nationwide moratorium on tuition increases this year. According to students and youth groups, they urged the 451 schools to follow with the footsteps of SUC’s observance of nationwide moratorium and even called on the CHED to reject the applications of the 451 private schools.

The groups calling for moratorium on tuition increase welcomed the announcement made by the Philippine (–foul word(s) removed–)ociation of State Universities and Colleges (SUC) to impose a nationwide tuition hike moratorium for the incoming school year.

Although the “PASUC” memorandum was “not mandatory” as it was still the school board of each state university that will decide if they will follow the memorandum or not.

On the PASUC resolution, which was enjoined by all 111 state-owned universities and colleges to halt tuition hikes, even in schools that have already approved increases for the coming academic year.
