Raymond Martin: First Filipino-American to Win Two Paralympic Gold Medals

The Philippine Team may not be successful in their quest for an elusive gold in the currently held London Paralympic but one Filipno-American named Raymond Martin, made a mark by winning two gold medals for the country he was representing.

Filipino-American athlete Raymond Martin represented the United States in the 2012 London Paralympics and he already won two gold medals over the weekend.

Martin was an 18-year-old athlete of the United States who won the men’s T-52 100 meters event when he raced to the finish line within 17.02 seconds and gave the United States it’s first ever gold medal in the track and field events last Sunday.

Another medal won by the Filipino-American Martin was the t-52 400 meters race where he clocked 58.54 seconds and won his second gold on Monday by beating the silver medalist from Japan.

Raymond Martin was born with Freeman Sheldon Syndrome or a congenital deformity since the time he was born. During his early days in preschool he already learned on how to race in his wheelchair.

He was also a former athlete at an early age of 7 competing with the National Junior Disability Championship. Martin was nominated by ESPY Awards by ESPN on 2012 in the category “Best Male Athlete with Disability.”
