Updates: Monday, February 6, 2012 a strong earthquake struck Philippines especially in Negros and Cebu. It was reported that the quake was a 6.8 magnitude.

According to the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) the quake was measured as a 6.9 shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was recorded at 71 km. SSE of Bacolod City.

After 30 minutes, a magnitude of 4.8 and 5.6 aftershocks according on the USGS scale. This was also felt in affected areas.

Benito Ramos, Office of Civil Defence chief said that a child died due to a collapsed wall in collapsed in Taysan town in Negros Oriental province.

Furthermore, Ramos said that there is a small chance of having a tsunami. But Philvolcs declared a tsunami alert level 2 for coastal areas in Negros and Cebu. According to Philvolcs the public were highly advised to stay away from the shoreline most especially the people of Negros and Cebu islands who were reported to be the epicenter of the quake. The people were also asked to be updated to later earthquake activities or any signs of rising tides.

Edwin Lacierda the Presidential Spokesperson said that PHIVOLCS has already ordered by the President of the Philippines Benigno Aquino III to monitor areas affected by the quake for any further seismic activity.

However, the most effective way to get through this situation is to pray, to be watchful, and to apply necessary safety precautions.
