Serena Williams captures Stanford Classic Crown

Serena WilliamsIt took her an hour and 22 minutes to capture the Stanford Classic crown in California.  The 29-year old Serena William is back in her champion track after beating Marion Bartoli, 7-5 6-1.

Williams has been out of action for almost a year due to foot injury and blood clot in her lungs. While rehabilitating her injury, she withdrew on several tournaments and lost her World No. 1 ranking.

She was not successful upon her return during 2011 AEGON International, in Eastbourne as she suffered a heart breaking lost to top-seeded world no. 3 Vera Zvonareva in a growling 3-hour match that ended in  6–3, 6–7, 5–7. It was followed by a devastating defeat against world’s number 9 French, Bartoli. It caused Serena to drop her ranking to world no. 175.

Williams’s recent victory against Bartoli is her 38th tour title and her first title of the year.  She’s now ranked world no. 79, in good shape and well prepared for U.S. Open that will start on 29th August.

Victoria Azarenka  and Maria Kirilenko on the other hand, captured the doubles title.
